The weight is the proportion (not a percentage), that a result contributes toward the 'Overall Grade'. If a weighting is set to '0' then it will not contribute to the overall score at all.
Weightings can be assigned to the following components:
- 'Criterion' Weighting
- 'Assessment Type' Weighting
- 'Assessment' Weightings
- 'Assessment Group' Weightings
How the Weightings are Applied
The weightings are applied differently depending on whether 'Criterion' weighting is enabled, or the 'Assessment Type' weighting is enabled.
To check which is enabled go to the 'Overview of Assessments' sub-page and click on the assessment, if under the criterion you can enter a weighting this indicates 'Criterion' weights are enabled, if not 'Assessment Type' weightings are enabled.
Criterion Weightings are Enabled
- The 'Assessment Criterion' weightings are applied within the assessment to establish the overall assessment result.
- The 'Assessment' weightings are applied to determine the overall result for the 'Assessment Group'.
- The 'Assessment Group' weightings are applied, to establish the overall result (i.e. CalG and Cal%).
Assessment Type Weightings are Enabled
- The 'Assessment Type' weightings are calculated across the assessments within the Assessment group, to establish the overall assessment group result.
- The 'Assessment Group' weightings are applied, to establish the overall result (i.e. CalG and Cal%).
Case Examples
Below are some examples showing different marks book set-ups that use weightings.
Scenario 1: The Two Final Exams Have Same Weighting
The final exams have the same weighting with the rest of the assessments set to a different weighting. There is an overall mark for exams and assessments, however the exams are reported on separately.
- Create two groups, 'All Assessments' and 'Exams'.
- Create the assessments for the year.
- Create two assessments (i.e. 'Exam 1' and 'Exam 2'), which will be used to store the exam result.
- Assign the assessments to the 'All Assessments' group.
- When it's reporting time, transfer the 'Overall Grade' to the reporting section.
- Deselect the calculator for the group 'All Assessments'. The 'Overall Grade' will then only include the assessment group called 'Exams'.
- Transfer the 'Overall Grade' into the 'Exam' column in the reporting section.
Scenario 2: Semester 1 and Semester 2 Exams Have Different Weightings
- Create two types called 'Exam S1 (Weight 40)' and 'Exam S2 (Weight 60)'.
- Create two assessments (i.e. 'Exam 1' and 'Exam 2'), which will be used to store the exam result.
- Assign 'Exam 1' to the type 'Exam S1', and, 'Exam 2' to the type 'Exam S2'.
- Under 'Overview of Assessments', ensure the 'Assessment Weighting' is the same for both assessments.
Scenario 3: Semester 1 and Semester 2 Have Different Weightings
When calculating the overall marks, Exams will have these same weightings applied. The Exams are then reported separately with 'Exam 1' and 'Exam 2' having the same weighting applied.
- Create three groups, 'Semester 1', 'Semester 2' and 'Exams'.
- Create the assessments for the year and assign to either 'Semester 1' or 'Semester 2'.
- Create two assessments (i.e. 'Exam 1' and 'Exam 2').
- Assign 'Exam 1' to 'Semester 1' and 'Exam 2' to 'Semester 2'.
- When it's reporting time, transfer the 'Overall Grade' to the reporting section.
- Next assign 'Exam 1' and 'Exam 2' to the group 'Exams'.
- Unselect the calculator for the groups 'Semester 1' and 'Semester 2'. The 'Overall Grade' will then only include the assessment group called 'Exams'.
- Transfer the 'Overall Grade' into the 'Exam' column in the reported section.
